Snow Business

Even here in Virginia, winter can put a wrinkle in the work we do each week. But the flexibility, instincts, and โ€œcan doโ€ attitude of our volunteers beat the 6โ€ of snow that blanketed the area this week. Packing orders before the storm, offering expanded pickup times for clients and social workers – and lots of shoveling โ€“ made the difference for our clientsโ€ฆ
On Wednesday, a gentleman picked up a headboard and frame for his wife who was undergoing a painful surgery and in need of a more substantial bed. Then a couple arrived with a rented truck, which we filled with furniture for their small, basement apartment.
Thursday morning was more slush than snow, and a snow plow had cleared much of our driveway. One of our community partners came to pick up beds, a dining table, and chairs for a single mother and her two childrenโ€ฆthe mom had been sleeping on their sofa and the kids on a worn and dirty mattress. We were so pleased to help them improve their living conditions. And a social worker came by to get a pack-and-play, a bassinet, baby clothes and baby goods for a teenage mother and her newborn child.
This weekโ€™s weather renewed our respect for the power of nature. But we give thanks that the same Power that drives that nature guides us through the challenges. Whatever your talents, know that God can use them in serving your neighbor. Come join us!
